Renovated oak staircase with black metal railings

Stair Renovation

Your stairs are the first thing people see from the front door and the most-used surface in the house. We turn carpeted or worn stairs into solid hardwood treads and risers, stained to match your floors, in homes across Toronto and the GTA.

Services We Provide

  • Carpet, pad, tack strip and staple removal
  • New hardwood treads with bullnose or square nosing
  • New risers, paint-grade or hardwood to match
  • Stain and finish matched to your floors
  • Top nosing, landings and transitions to the adjacent floors

What a Stair Renovation Does Well

New hardwood treads change how the whole entry reads. Carpet comes off, the stairs match the floors around them, and the nosing, landing and top transition tie every level together. Most jobs are a cap-over: new hardwood on the existing structure, without rebuilding the stair.

What's under your carpet decides the approach. Solid hardwood treads in decent shape can sometimes be refinished, but many GTA stairs were built from plywood or particleboard meant to sit under carpet, and those need new hardwood. Our carpet to hardwood stairs guide shows how to tell. Railings and spindles are quoted separately.

Our Approach

How a stair job runs, from first look to final coat.

Consultation

Step 1

We look under the carpet, check for squeaks and movement, and measure every step, landing and nosing.

Select Material

Step 2

We choose the species, nosing profile and stain with you, matched to the floors on each level.

Select a Date

Step 3

You get a written estimate per step, plus landings and railings if needed, and we set a start date together.

Initiation

Step 4

Old surfaces come off, new treads and risers go on from the bottom up, and finishing is done in stages so the stairs stay usable.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a stair renovation cost in Toronto?

As a 2026 planning range, it's about $150–350 per step for new hardwood treads and risers, installed and finished. A typical 12–14 step staircase is $2,500–$5,000, including the top nosing and transitions. Railings are quoted separately. See the stair cost guide.

Can you convert carpeted stairs to hardwood?

Yes. Carpet, pad, tack strip and staples come off, and new hardwood treads and risers go on, by cap-over or full replacement.

Can my new stairs match my floors?

Yes. Oak treads can be stained on site to match your floor, or prefinished treads can be ordered to match. It's easiest when stairs and floors are done together.

How long will we be without our stairs?

A typical staircase takes two to four working days. Finishing is usually done in stages, so the stairs stay usable for most of the job.

Are railings included?

Railings and spindles are quoted separately. If you're replacing them, it's efficient to do it at the same time as the treads.
